Koelsch, Carnival & the River Rhine
Cologne is at once four things: a shopping center, a media capital, an artistic hub, and a traffic junction near Holland. Through its revitalized industrial buildings and pedestrian zones, the city has also acquired a certain hipness factor. When you exit the Cologne train station, you immediately stumble upon the Gothic dome, whose new glass windows by artist Gerhard Richter infuse it with a new play of pixelated color. Right next door, the Museum Ludwig offers an imposing collection of modern art. The busy shopping street, Hohe Strasse, leads from the dome's square to the city center, from which branches an alleyway lined with cafés and bookstores. The neighborhood inside the Ring, in which one can also find plenty of art galleries, is easily covered on foot -for the concert and tavern visits located in the Kwartier Latäng student area near the Zülpicher Platz station, however, the subway is still the most comfortable option.
