Mining began in Freiberg as early as the 12th century. The rich mineral reserves led to the creation of probably the most attractive town in the Ore Mountains whose splendour culminates in the Cathedral of Saint Mary with the Silbermann organ and the tulip pulpit. The mining academy, founded in 1765, is the oldest in the world.
