From the 16th to 19th century, Sangerhausen was a centre for silver and copper mining. Evidence of the prosperity of this period is provided by the splendid townhouses on the market square. You should also visit the Romanesque basilica of Saint Ulrich and the Spengler Museum, where the skeleton of an ancient mammoth is on display.
