Greifswald was the second important town of the Hanseatic League in Western Pomerania. The university in particular breathes new life into the almost entirely preserved Old Town with its churches and town houses. The cathedral of St Nicholas with the slender west tower is one of the finest churches in eastern Germany.
The museum in Greifswald is a must and not just because of the pictures by Caspar David Friedrich. The museum, which was completed in the summer of 2005, chronicles regional history from the Ice Age through to the present day. There are seven works of Caspar David Friedrich hanging in the picture gallery.
