3. largest city in Lower Saxony. 1648 the Westphalian Peace was closed in Osnabrück and Münster
Charles the Great elevated this town to the seat of a bishop in 800. He also laid the foundation stone for the cathedral, but its present-day guise dates back to the 13th century. The market square with the striking late-Gothic town hall is also delightful.
