Copan

A Mayan city that was abandoned in the 10th century.

Discovered in 1570 by Diego García de Palacio, the ruins of Copán, one of the most important sites of the Mayan civilization, were not excavated until the 19th century. The ruined citadel and imposing public squares reveal the three main stages of development before the city was abandoned in the early 10th century.

For all interested in history an absolutely interesting sight. When travelling through Central America you can make it a one day stay - take one of the hotels in Copan Ruinas, a small village right next to the ancient town of Copan. You will even find nightlife as there are some really good cocktail bars! The ancient town is within walking distance and can be reached easily the next morning...
