Appenzell displays cultivated tradition and a touristy atmosphere, particularly in its main street with its painted wooden houses. The "Landsgemeindeplatz" is at the western end of the main street with the Church of St Maurice (14th-19th centuries) flanked by the town hall (1560) to the east.
