Lausanne, capital of the canton of Vaud, has a central plaza, la Place St-François, dominates the town; everything and everyone meets there, especially young people. In the midst of the largely car-free old city center is the business district and also excellent lanes for strolling, with many street cafes. Above the square stands St-François Church, the remnant of a Franciscan monastery that dates from the 13th century. The religious building even more worth your time is the Cathédrale Notre-Dame, which can be accessed by the covered market stairs. In the building, the foundation stone of which was laid in 1173, the rose window in the south transept from the 13th century is particularly worth seeing. Lausanne looks down from a hill on Lake Geneva. So you have to make your way down to Lausanne-Ouchy in order to get to the promenade. You can take the Metro, which by the way is the only one in Switzerland and yet is but a leisurely cog railway under the ground. Ouchy is a cozy little place that is good for strolling. You can see sailing boats and the Savoy Alps, and it's all very Mediterranean.
