At least for the daring participants of the diehard road cycling classic, Liège-Bastogne-Liège, it's true all year long: all roads lead to Liège. For tourism this belief is not absolutely true, but more and more so all the time. Only a few miles from Dutch Maastricht and German Aachen, the capital of the Walloon region of Belgium is a remarkably historical city through which the rivers Ourthe and Meuse course picturesquely. Old stone churches from Gothic and even Roman times and an abundance of pavement cafes and French-style squares dominate the old city. Run-down buildings on the banks continue on the edge of the city -- relics of the industrial boom of the 1960s and the declining coal and steel industry -- unfortunately provide for the contrast. Elsewhere, new, innovative structures -- above all the new train station by architect Santiago Calatrava -- are drawing Liège's skyline of tomorrow in the sky.

  • It 'a very dirty and unattractive city. Not worth to spend time for the visit ... Many buildings are dilapidated. People are rude and wherever they ask alms. Stay far from there!
