Café Gijón opened in 1888 and, for over 100 years has been associated with artists, actors and writers, and others artistic and political types. Café de Gijón is a place where people can meet for informal chats about everything. It has hardly changed over the years and is a great place to meet with friends and watch people on the busy Paseo de Recoletos. The Cafe has an interesting plaque above a cabinet, which reads: "from here Alfonso, match seller and anarquist, sold tobacco and saw the world pass by." It is dedicated to him by his friends at the Café.
