While visiting Madrid it is quiet likely that you will be staying in the vicinity of Puerta del Sol. Apart from being the geographical center of the capital it is also located in the heart of Spain. You can go and see the marker on the pavement in front of the Ayuntamiento (Council) building as all road distances in Spain are measured from this spot (Kilometer Zero). The word ‘Puerta’ in Spanish means gate and it was named so because in the 15th century it was the city’s main eastern most gate, which was surrounded by churches and monasteries under the rule of King Habsburg. It was rebuilt to its present form in 1854-62, and over the years it has developed considerably and is now Madrid’s most popular meeting spots.
