When Navy PIer first opened in 1916, it was the largest pier in the world - though it was used for commercial shipping purposes and even served as a training ground for Navy sailors and pilots during WWII, it was always designed as a mixed-use public space. Today, Navy PIer is certainly mixed-use, if you count eating, drinking and meandering as mixed-use. Sightseeing cruises are a more ubiquitous sight than lake freighters, and the old cargo warehouses now house restaurants, concert stages, exhibition halls, shopping kiosks and public art installations. There's even a ferris wheel and an IMAX theatre here, but the Disney-fication of Navy Pier is far over - there are plans for everything from floating hotel to a water park.
Navy Pier is always full of tourists, making the parking, food and pretty much everything else expensive. The views of the Chicago skyline are pretty, but you can get views just as nice, but in a much quieter atmosphere, at the Museum Campus.Navy Pier travel guide by cristina is this text outdated?
