Formerly a suburban area that lay outside city walls, Spittelberg is one of the few areas that has managed to preserve their original 18th- or 19th-century architecture, appearance and charm. The narrow, cobbled streets between Siebensterngasse and Burggasse are resonant of an era gone by. Its baroque and Biedermeier houses have been restored and many of the streets pedestrianized. However, it is not just the historical charm that makes this a popular place with locals. The district also boasts one of the city's densest concentrations of bars, cafes and restaurants. Known also for unique arts and crafts, the streets are often crowded with open markets. The Christmas market here, however, is in a league by itself. A wonderful slice of Vienna, worth a visit no matter what the time of year!
