Cricova is a small Moldovan town located 15 km north of Chişinău, the capital of Moldova. Cricova is famous for its wine cellars, which make it a popular attraction for tourists.
Cricova's natural underground labyrinth with 120 km (74 miles) long roadways is one of the biggest in the world. Half of the roadways are used for wine storage. The roads are named by the wines they store. This city has its warehouses, tasting rooms and other facilities underground. It goes down to 100 m (328 ft) below ground and holds 1.25 million bottles of rare wine. The oldest wine dates back to 1902. The temperature is about 12 degrees Celsius all year round (which is perfect for wine).
The territory used to be a mine for limestone, a building material. In some branches excavation is still active, thus the cellar is growing.
The town's population is about 9,800 (as of 2004). Other famous wineries include Cojusna and Milestii Mici.
Cricova lies near the river Ichel, which goes into the Nistru river, which supplies Chisinau with water. The water from Ichel is not used in Cricova for certain things. In the southern part of the river is situated a lake (which is near the entrance to the Cricova wine cellars), which is used by population mainly for swimming. (...) more....
