Tian Tan Buddha's nickname is "Big Buddha," and it's a bit of an understatement; at 110 ft. high and weighing in at 250 metric tons, it was the world's tallest outdoor bronze seated Buddha until 2002, when it was dethroned by the Spring Temple Buddha in China. Though there are still monks and nuns - it is still an active monastery - you're more likely to be surrounded by crowds of camera-happy tourists. It's 268 daunting steps to the top, but the resulting views are worth the heavy huffing and puffing.
Though you can take the bus to Tian Tan Buddha, it's worth taking the Ngong Ping 360 cable car from Tung Chung MTR station. Floating slowly over verdant hills and eventually stopping within walking distance of the Buddha, it's unlike any ride you'll take in Hong Kong. It's also worth seeing how the Buddha dominates the landscape, a formidable sight even from far away.
