In 1944, Chapultepec Castle became the site of the National Museum of History (Museo Nacional de Historia) with 193 exhibition halls Mex-Museo Nacional de Historia, Mex-National Museum of History. The museum shows a collection of pre-Columbian artefacts and reproductions of codices. There are also many exhibits elucidating the history of Mexico after the Spanish conquest. Among the exhibits are portraits of important figures in Mexican history as well as frescoes by Orozco "La Reforma y la Caida del Imperio", by Siqueiros ("Del Porfirismo a la Revolución", room 13) and by O'Gorman ("Retablo de la Independencia", room 7). The state coaches used by Emperor Maximilian, Benito Juárez and others are also notable. Emperor Maximilian and his wife lived in a part of the castle in the neo-classical style. They brought furniture from Europe with them to furnish their residence. There is a stunning view from the terrace.
