Any way you look at it, Montevideo oozes charm. Small - its population barely over the 1 million mark - Montevideo has friendly inhabitants and tree-lined streets adorned by cafes and bookstores. The Ciudad Vieja opens the way for ornate buildings leading down to Uruguay's major port. In this area, the Mercado del Puerto will have carnivores salivating at the available options; later, after dark, just a few blocks away, other doors open, blinds are drawn, and the night life begins. It comes as no surprise that Montevideo is routinely declared as the Latin American city in which the citizens enjoy the highest quality of life. Given the ethnic breakdown of the city's inhabitants, you could be forgiven for thinking you are in Europe; stopping in at a café on the Ciudad Vieja to enjoy a strong coffee is a bit like some parts of Lisbon. Start at the Plaza de Independencia, with the towering Edificio Salvo - once South America's tallest building - and seek out the many things that will catch the eye, whether theater, monument, museum, or bookstore. On Sunday, don't miss the La Feria de Tristán Narvaja flea market, which brings out all types of vendors hawking antiques, heirlooms, and curiosities. As you stroll down to the rambla that lines the seafront, you try to put your finger on what you feel here, and then you get it. It is a privilege to be here.
