Centuries ago, the Catholic Church dominated Europe, and its popes held absolute power of life and death over much of the continent’s population. Nowadays (although still very influential throughout the world), true papal sovereignty is limited to this 108-acre enclave, which sits in a Roman district that was called vaticanus mons (prophetic hill) during pre-Christian times. Although Vatican City is an inherently religious place, its world-class museum collections range from Egyptian antiquities to modern religious art. An admission fee of about $18 buys you access to a wide variety of exhibits, including the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel, and the Apostolic Palace of the Lateran. Extensive renovations mean that the Vatican Library will remain closed until 2010, so if your neck gets sore from looking up, step outside and take a stroll through St. Peter’s Square. Before you head back across the border into the Eternal City, visit St. Peter’s Basilica, which purportedly stands over the earthly remains of the world’s first pope.
