AKA Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe
Unveiled in 2005, Berlin's Holocaust Memorial is a sea of over 2,700 towering concrete slabs varying in height and width, set upon uneven ground. A maze of gray and sunlight, the labyrinth is meant to provoke feelings of disorientation that mimic how the Nazis lost touch with human reason, but the abstract memorial has proven controversial. With no plaque or symbols, some feel that the memorial does not go far enough. In any case, this provocative memorial is well worth a visit.
