Kokshetau (Көкшетау, Kökshetau; also known as Kokchetav) is the administrative center of Akmola Province, northern Kazakhstan. It has a population of 123,400 (1997 census). The name of the city established in 1824 means "sky-coloured mountain". There are urban light industries such as food production. The region produces low grades of wheat and other cultures. There is a gold mining operation north of the city.
Kokshetau has one airport with flights to Almaty and Petropavlovsk. The city is connected by railroad with Russia, as well southern Kazakhstan.
Astana, the new capital of Kazakhstan, lies some 300 km to the south-east. Kokshetau is well known for its nature and tourist sites, such as Burabay (Borovoe) Resort, among others. (...)
