The U.S. ain't got nothin' on Mongolia -- this is the real wild, wild west, and rough-and-tumble Ulaan Baatar is in the center of it all. Most Mongolian adventures begin and end in this most unlikely city that has thrived amidst the harshest weather extremes and inhospitable landscape; even now, you can still see ger camps set up next to modern houses. Ulaan Baatar certainly won't win any awards for looks, nor is it a city that cares to coddle naive tourists, but you'll have a great time checking out monasteries, museums, and taking day trips out into nature. It's certainly worth exploring for a couple of days before you head out into other parts of Mongolia. And while you're here, eat something Western -- not only is this the best dining scene you'll find before reaching Beijing/Moscow, but a surprisingly large French expat population ensures a decent selection of tasty bakeries. Really, the croissants are only the first of many surprises you'll encounter in Ulan Baatar.
