Close to the Guatemalan border, the serene ruins of Copán are Honduras’ major Maya attraction. Treasured for its exceptional artistry when compared to other Maya sites, the ruins enjoy a calm and pleasant setting. The quiet town of Copán Ruinas nestles among hills nearby. In fact, the whole area is sprinkled with interesting towns and villages, mostly in delightful hilly surroundings; some with a colourful colonial history, others with their foundations in the Lenca communities, and many producing handicrafts. The ruins of Copán aside, one of the enjoyable aspects of western Honduras is that there are no ‘must-sees’ – just pick a route, take your time and enjoy the scenery and whatever else you may find.
