Ahuachapán is the capital of the department of Ahuachapán in the nation of El Salvador, Central America. It is a city of 116,500 people about ten miles from the western border with Guatemala. Other cities of notable size in the Department of Ahuchapán include Atiquizaya, Chalchuahapa, and Tacuba.
Among other things, Ahuachapan is known for the local geothermal activity that produces many steam vents, visible throughout the surrounding mountains.
