Vientiane (in Lao - Viang-chan) is the very quiet capital of Laos. Somehow "Europeans" put an "S" on the country. The official language is Lao, the people call themselves Lao, and it is officially the PDR of Lao ... so go figure. It isn't Laos!
Folks have very firm opinions on this capital. Often referred to as the largest village in SE Asia, it is either love it or hate it. Yes, Vientiane is 'on the way to somewhere else', usually the charm of Luang Prabang. There is the mystery of northern Lao tucked up under the Chinese Province of Yunnan, or south toward Cambodia where the 4000 Islands area is so flat and different to the mountainous north - it boldly reaffirms that this is a land of contrasts.
