Muqdadiyah (المقدادية) (also transliterated Al-Muqdadiyah, Muqdadia, Miqdadiyah) is a city in the Diyala Governorate of Iraq.
This city was a part of the Persian Sassanid Empire and had the Persian name Shahraban, meaning the satrap. The name is still used locally, although as of late, the term Muqdadiyah--"given by the Magi" (a Zoroastrian priest) has largely replaced the old name, Shahraban, but not completely.
The city is located at about 80 km northeast of Baghdad and 30 km northeast of Baquba, the capital of Diyala.
It has a population of about 80,000 inhabitants, about 60 percent of them Sunni. (...) more....
