On the shores of the Atlantic and the economic capital of the Republic of Congo (the smaller one with the capital city of Brazzaville), Pointe Noire has more restaurants, hotels, and general amenities than the rest of the country combined. Plenty of expatriates living and working here have created a living standard vastly different from the rest of the country, and pastimes are plenty - namely sport fishing and hanging out in the city`s numerous night clubs. The city was originally founded as the terminus of the Congo Ocean railway from Brazzaville, though few use the train these days as it is unreliable. Outside of the city are plenty of things worth seeing, including the gorge near Diosso and the weekend beach escape of Pointe Indienne. Further north is the Jane Goodall Chimpanzee Sanctuary, and for a more rustic experience, visiting Conkouati Douli National Park to see some wildlife is worth the trouble.
Thanks to its prime location near the equator, the climate is warm and humid for the entire year, but this is tempered by the cool ocean to make the weather quite pleasant. It's worth having your own vehicle to go around, as taxis can be expensive. Regular flights directly from Paris also make visiting here convenient, instead of requiring a transit through Brazzaville.
