Capital of Afghanistan and Taliban-free since 2001 (although it may not remain this way), Kabul has a pleasant charm to it in spite of a tired and war-weary atmosphere. Streets are crowded with foot traffic and ancient Soviet buses, while military vehicles dodge in and out of thoroughfares with tripod-mounted machine guns pointed at anyone who comes too close. Surprisingly, the city has much to keep a visitor occupied. Check out Chicken Street for a famous stretch of souvenir sellers who peddle unique items from around central Asia at bargain prices, including rifles and ancient Hindu paintings. Beside it, the Mustafa Hotel is an old hangout for every foreign face that has passed through town over the numerous wars and insurgencies stretching back to the 1960s. Further afield, the Kabul Museum has recently been renovated and hosts a great collection of tribal art from the Afghan provinces, and beside it is the Darul Aman Palace, pock-marked with mortar fire and a sorry reminder of how much damage has been done to a region steeped in ancient history. Also worth seeing is the Kabul Zoo, with a decent collection of animals for a city still in the middle of a damaging conflict. The Babur Gardens are near the city center and have been recently restored. Also, the ancient walls and mud huts that dot the Hindu Kush mountains make the city a strikingly scenic mountain town when viewed from a distance.

This is Kabul: Traffic jams in the morning, around noon, from 3 p.m. until 7 in the evening. Good for studying drivers, bad for your lungs.

Just landed in Kabul. We're here one day before heading south with the Marines. We were about to land when they closed Kabul International.

Absolutely beautiful evening in Kabul. Perfect temp, slight breeze. Lots of people out enjoying themselves. Doesn't feel like a war zone.
