Bolama is the closest to the mainland of Guinea-Bissau Bissagos lying island of the archipelago. It is also the name of the capital of Bolamaregion. The island is almost entirely surrounded by mangrove forests and famous for its cashew nuts. The island itself was uninhabited when British colonists arrived in 1792.
