Of all Bangkok, this area most resembles a Western city, with its international banks, skyscrapers, first-class hotels, shopping malls, pizza parlours and pubs. It is also home to one of the world’s best-known red-light districts – Patpong.

Soi Ngam Duphli to the east was the pre-Khaosan backpacker area and now mostly caters for long-stay guests on a tight budget. The rather racy after-hours’ scene here is a draw for some and an unwanted distraction for others.

Silom area

A cut above the competition, at over 100 years old and host to some of history’s most infamous literary figures, The Oriental is both a Bangkok legend and one of the finest hotels in the world. A fairy-tale like interior of grandiose proportions, beautiful position overlooking the river and incomparable individual service (despite its 400 rooms). The older Author’s wing is the place for high tea and each room is named after a famous guest/author from Somerset Maughan to Barbara Cartland. The Garden wing offers similar levels of nostalgic luxury. The modern River wing and Tower feature more contemporary design and river terraces. Recommended.
