SleepingYou should book more expensive hotels well in advance through the internet or a good travel agency, particularly for the week or so around Inti Raymi , when prices are much higher. Hotel prices, especially in the mid to upper categories, are often lower when booked through tour agencies. When there are fewer tourists hotels may drop their prices by as much as half. Be wary of unlicensed hotel agents for mid-priced hotels, who are often misleading about details; their local nickname is jalagringos (gringo pullers), or piratas (pirates). Taxis and tourist minibuses meet arriving trains and take you to the hotel of your choice for US$0.75-1, but be insistent. Many hotels and hostales can arrange tours: don’t be pressured into buying, but compare services with outside agencies for best value. It is cold at night in Cuzco and many hotels do not have heating. It is worth asking for an estufa, a heater, which some places will provide for an extra charge. When staying in the big, popular hotels, allow plenty of time to check out if you have a plane or train to catch: front desks can be very busy. Assume that hotels have free luggage storage and 24-hr hot water in pre-heated tanks, unless otherwise stated. The city can suffer from water shortages. Cuzco’s low-power electric showers often do a poor job of heating the very cold water and their safety is sometimes questionable.
