Only three buildings remain of the old town after it was obliterated by bombs in the Second World War: the old General Post Office on Jalan Gaya, Atkinson’s Clocktower (built in 1905 and named after Jesselton’s first district officer) and the old red-roofed Lands and Surveys building. The renovated post office now houses the Sabah Tourism Board. For a good view of the town and offshore islands, walk to the top of Signal Hill, just east of the centre.
The nearest decent beach is Tanjung Aru, 5 km south. It is popular at weekends and has a good open-air food court. Take the Tanjung Aru (beach) bus from the station by City Hall.
