city / town

All the hotels have restaurants and bars, which are also very popular with non-guests. There are a number of superb individual restaurants but most of these tend to be out in the upmarket suburbs so you will need to take a taxi. Increasingly, many of the good restaurants have relocated from the city centre to the shopping malls on the outskirts. For cheap eats in the city centre there are numerous food kiosks around River Rd and Tom Mboya St selling African and Indian food and snacks, and around the business district of the city between Kenyatta Av and City Hall Way there are plenty of coffee bars. There are also branches of quality South African fast- food chains dotted around the city centre and at petrol stations in the suburbs. Debonairs serves pizza and salads, while Steers offers burgers, ribs and chips. There are also a number of Wimpys and several branches ofl local Kenchic Inn, for good chicken and chips costing around US$2.

Nairobi’s tap water is not necessarily dysentery-inducing, but stick to bottled water (even to brush your teeth), and avoid ice and washed salads.
