As the second biggest tourist destination in Egypt, Luxor has thousands of beds – from the most luxurious to the dingiest of crash-dives. As a result, when tourism wanes due to the intense heat of summer or tension in the region, competition is fierce. Prices get sliced, sometimes in half, and bargaining is the norm. If you’re travelling in peak season (Nov-Feb), it’s wise to book ahead; otherwise, shop around. The 5-star hotels are mostly located along the Nile, some quite far from the town centre. Mid-range hotels tend to be scattered both north and south of Sharia Mahatta, the central vein that runs perpendicular to the Nile from the train station. Most offer swimming pools and rooftop terraces with bars. Budget hotels are concentrated around the souk, at the town centre and along Sharia Televizion to the south. Virtually all budget hotels in Luxor include breakfast and virtually all breakfasts consist of exactly the same thing: bread, jam, cheese, tea or coffee, and a boiled egg. In the listing that follows, it is only noted if breakfast is extraordinary or not included.
