West of downtown Kingston, near the May Pen Cemetery, is the Bob Marley Culture Yard, a project started by the Trench Town Development Association (TTDA) (6 Lower First St, Trench Town, Kingston, T9484455, and 18 Collie Smith Drive, Kingston 12, T7576739) a community-based NGO, to boost the inner-city community of Trench Town, concentrating on the reggae heritage of Bob Marley and other great musicians who came from the area. Culture Yard is an attraction in the making, based on restoring the home and belongings of the reggae superstar to be opened for visitors.
Beaches
The swimming at Kingston is not good and the sea at Gunboat beach, near the airport, is dirty. Swim at Port Royal and the cays offshore instead. ‘Hellshire’, south of Port Henderson, is a locals’ favourite, but is about 15 to 20 minutes out of Kingston depending on traffic. Bammy (made from cassava root) and festival (a Jamaican appetizer) with fish are prepared along the beach strip.
