Beyond the centre

South of the city, accessed via Avenida Fray Vicente Solano, beyond the football stadium, is El Turi church, orphanage and mirador, well worth a visit for the great views; a tiled panorama explains what you see. It’s a 40-minute walk from the base to the church or two hours from the colonial city (not safe after dark); or take a taxi.

The suburb of San Joaquín, out west near the tennis club, is famous for its basket- work. There are many houses where you can see the different types of baskets being made. Some of the styles, in particular the hourglass shapes, are made only in the Cuenca and Azogues areas.
