Those wishing to try cuy should do so here as it’s cheaper than in Cuzco. Also try mondongo, a soup made from intestines, maize and mint. Many restaurants have this and puca picante (beef in a thick spicy sauce) on their Fri lunch menu. You can also find mondongo at the central market in the Sección Comidas in the main building, or at Pasajes 2 and 3 outside; ensure food is piping hot.
For a cheap, healthy breakfast try maca, a drink of maca , apple and quinoa. It is sold opposite Santa Clara between 0600 and 0800. There are countless small, unnamed eating places around the centre. Few vegetarian options in town, so if required, buy food in the market and prepare it yourself in hostales such as La Crillonesa or San Blas.
