Since so many artisans have come to Lima, it is possible to find any kind of handicraft in the capital. Miraflores is a good place for high- quality, expensive handicrafts; there are many shops on and around Av La Paz.
Alpaca and cotton
There are bargains in high-quality Pima cotton. Shops selling alpaca items include:
Jewellery
On C La Esperanza, Miraflores, dozens of shops offer gold and silverware at very reasonable prices.
Markets
All are open 7 days a week until late.
Supermarkets
Supermarket chains include E Wong, Metro, Plaza Vea, Santa Isabel and the upmarket Vivanda. They are all well stocked and carry a decent supply of imported goods.
Art galleries
Many cultural centres have art galleries, cinemas and theatres.
Lima
For magazines, whether in downtown Lima or Miraflores, almost all street kiosks sell magazines in English. For the most recently published magazines and newspapers, try Mallcco’s on Av Larco 175, on the Parque Kennedy roundabout, open daily 0800-2100.
In front of Café Haiti by Parque Kennedy, men sell newspapers taken from arriving international flights; bargain hard.
It’s better to bring all camping and hiking gear from home. Camping gas (in small blue bottles) is available from any large hardware store or bigger supermarket, about US$3.
