Eating

The best places to eat are Chinatown, Little India and Arab St. The last couple of years has seen a burgeoning of restaurants along Club St; all are upmarket eateries, catering for city business people. Restaurants overlooking the river at Boat Quay (bargains sometimes available), Clarke Quay and Robertson Quay are hugely popular, for the river breeze and views. Go for a casual stroll along the river bank to find your perfect spot.

Some of the best vegetarian restaurants – South Indian particularly – are found on the other side of Serangoon Rd, along Upper Dickson Rd. Arab St is the best area for Muslim food of all descriptions – Malay, Indonesian, Indian or Arabic. Try New Bugis St for simple open-air fare and jugs of cold beer.

Chinese meals are eaten with chopsticks and Malays and Indians traditionally eat with their right hands. It is just as acceptable, however, to eat with spoons and forks. In Malay and Indian company, do not use the left hand for eating.
