After its destruction, newly built National Theatre (1955-1957) with Large and Small House. It achieved fame on account of premiere performances such as Schiller's 'The robbers' (1782).

The 60 m tall tower built in 1888 is a city symbol. The square with its splendid water displays is considered as one of the largest and most beautiful Jugendstil grounds in Germany.

The branch of the regional museum contains a machine room, a ship's kitchen as well as numerous models, photographs and equipment items inside a paddle steamer.

History of industrialisation and social history are shown. Visitors take a walk into the 20th century along a spiral of time, informative demonstrations, for instance on the subject of car assembly.

The Jugendstil building accommodates 19th and 20th century paintings and sculptures. Work by Rodin and Barlach, French impressionism and new objectivity are recommendable.

The collections divided over two buildings include Dutch 17th century painting, porcelain, bureau bookcases, pre/early historic and ethnological finds.

The former central Alarmplatz is todays' lively centre of town. The fountain arrangement is decorated with the Baroque bronze pyramid 'Allegory of the ruling virtues'.

The Alte Rathaus (old city hall) and the Untere Pfarrkirche (lower parish church) are located on the market place. The Jewish community centre with a modern synagogue built in 1987 is nearby.
