Ohkay Owingeh is a pueblo in Rio Arriba County, New Mexico, United States. It is located 25 miles (40 km.) north of Santa Fe.

Ohkay Owingeh is the headquarters of the Eight Northern Indian Pueblos Council, and the pueblo people are from the Tewa ethnic group of Native Americans who speak the Tewa language.
After taking control of the pueblo in 1598, Spanish conquistador Don Juan de Oñate renamed the pueblo to San Juan de los Caballeros after his own patron saint, St. John the Baptist. He then established the first Spanish capital of New Mexico near the pueblo. (...) more....
