Lakeville is a suburb 23 miles (37 km) south of downtown Minneapolis in the U.S. state of Minnesota in Dakota County. On the south metro fringe, Lakeville is one of the fastest growing cities in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The population was 43,128 at the 2000 census and the U.S. Census Bureau estimated the population in 2005 to be 51,722.
Lakeville is located on Interstate Highway 35, the sole major highway link to the Twin Cities. Along with lower-cost undeveloped land and protected natural resources, this has allowed the suburb to grow at a rapid pace. However, the city is historically rich with a 19th century downtown and an agriculture industry still in operation. While most residents commute downtown, Lakeville has maintained industry in its borders since the last century with it's largest job center, Airlake Industrial Park, built in the 1960s and served by a regional reliever airport.
