Wikipedia says:

Alexandria (in Greek, in Coptic, in Arabic, الإسكندرية in Egyptian Arabic, اسكندريه Eskendereyya), with a population of 3.5 to 5 million, is the second-largest city in Egypt, and its largest seaport.
Alexandria extends about 20 miles (32 km) along the coast of the Mediterranean sea in north-central Egypt. It is home to the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the New Library of Alexandria, and is an important industrial centre because of its natural gas and oil pipelines from Suez.

It was founded around 331 BC by Macedonian ruler Alexander the Great, and remained Egypt's capital for nearly a thousand years, until the Arabs conquered Egypt in 641 AD and set up a capital at Fustat (later absorbed into Cairo). Alexandria was known for the Lighthouse of Alexandria (one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World), the Library of Alexandria (the largest library in the ancient world) and the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa (one of the Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages). getting there

Excellent train connections between Alexandria and Cairo. From 7am to 8pm hourly, comfortable, air-conditioned trains, first class. Buy tickets several days before travel date.
Buses go in all directions from Alexandria: Marsa Matruh, Siwa, Tanta, Cairo, as well as long-distance connections to the Red Sea, Port Said, Suez and on to Sinai. Departure no longer from the central Midan Zaghloul (Raml Station) but – due to the hoped-for reduction of traffic in the city – from the new bus terminal Sidi Gaber, opposite the tracks of the railway station of the same name. SuperJet buses travel between Cairo and Alexandria every half hour; all other routes are served at least twice daily. Departure times are often changed at short notice and can be obtained from the ticket counter.
