Zaltbommel was first mentioned as "Bomela" in the year 850. In 1231 Zaltbommel received City rights, which were renewed in 1316.
The actual Municipality Zaltbommel was created on the 1st of January 1999, by a merge of the communities Brakel, Kerkwijk and Zaltbommel.Zaltbommel is situated in he heart of the Netherlands, next to the A2 Highway, railways and the rivers Waal and Maas.
