A Place to Enjoy Life
Greece is a complex and rewarding place for any traveler to visit. Historians will have many layers of the past to unravel, from classical ruins to abandoned Byzantine cities and a rich modern culture. Natural wonders are in abundance as well, from forest preserves in the north to the stark, rocky cliffs of the Cycladic islands. And although it may be one of the world’s favorite tourist destinations, Greece also hides a rich and vivid world waiting to be explored by independent-minded travelers. Athens may seem relentlessly commercial at first, but behind the tourism lies a growing cosmopolitan city with a stunning array of museums and historical sights. Santorini and Mykonos are packed with visitors and souvenir shops, but there is a seemingly endless array of other islands to be seen, from lush green Thasos in the north to tiny, sparsely populated Folegandros, with its rocky landscape and secluded beaches. Central and northern Greece are traditionally less popular with visitors, but they offer some of the most stunning and authentic sights to be found in the entire country: the traditional monasteries of Meteora and Mt. Athos, the marvelous food and nightlife in Thessaloniki, the clear blue waters of Halkidiki, and the natural wonders of Mt. Olympus and Lake Prespa. Finally, it is impossible to experience Greece properly without relaxing on one of the exquisite beaches and spending an afternoon lingering over a marvelous meal with homemade wine. Above all, Greece is a place to enjoy life.
