Great post as always, Maglayas! I have always thought of Thanksgiving as an expat holiday - originated by expats and, in the case of my childhood, perpetuated by my expat parents and their expat friends. Now that I'm an expat myself, it's even more special to me. This is my third Thanksgiving away from the U.S. so by now I've kind of got the rhythm down. I love serving homemade stuffing, green bean casserole, mountains of mashed potatoes, gravy, biscuits. I've never done cranberries or pies because we didn't do them in my parents' house; my mother's Bolivian best friend used to make a lovely blueberries and cream parfait so I dream of that instead. My *perfect* Thanksgiving would involve, oh, I don't know - a turkey but they're a little hard to find here in Dublin before Christmas so I'll probably do a roast chicken, the way I did in Japan. This year I have a real oven so woooooot! I'll be hunting down some Cream of Mushroom soup, fried onions, and canned green beans this week; I'm sure they'll be easier to find here than in Japan. Either way, I can't wait.

P.S. I have the same fridge magnet; I bought it in Korea a few years back. Cutest magnet ever ....

Who said "humiliate"? The point of this piece was that there are often small things to get used to when you head some place new. Perhaps the small things weren't big enough for some readers - I am in an English-speaking country that lent many customs to the country I'm from, after all. Maybe next time I'll write about the two and a half years I lived in Japan. Learning Japanese - my fourth language, by the way - has been challenging and fun. So is writing about my experiences. I'd much rather write about those than pretend to be superior on travel blogs. That's a big reason people overseas dislike Americans, by the way - that air of perceived superiority. Thanks for the help.

I love to travel and listening to music while travelling is like heaven to me. I would love to have my ipod with me. It could be a very good companion when you are alone.

Seriously, if these are humiliating experiences abroad, you aren't dedicating fully to becoming an ex-pat. There are may U.S. citizens who live abroad and DON'T write blogs - because they're too immersed in adapting. It is tiresome that so may (especially from New York) who leave US soil for more than 6 months fancies himself/herself a traveller and writes a blog, presuming that experiences new to you are new to all. This makes the rest of the US look silly by complaining about such things as driving on the left side. For many of us, the novelty in that experience was over by midway through our first trip to Europe - in 1977.

Shakshouka ( شكشوكة ), like many "Israeli" dishes is actually a quintessentially North and North West African dish, the name stems from arabic slang meaning "all mixed up".

I always have to travel with a pen! Sometimes my batteries may be dead and I really just need to write something down - a phone number, address or a name.

A compass is a must for me, especially for getting around big cities and knowing which way is "up" on your map. It's also great for driving around an unfamiliar country, to help make sure you're headed in the right direction!
