Destination: Music – Documentary by Colin Mulligan – tripwolf blogger

Roots, racket, and redemption is just what Colin Mulligan, a tripwolf blogger and author (see some of his texts here: Laos, Malawi) went in search of this summer as he headed towards the Caribbean.  He left inspired, and with hours and hours of video footage of local music from Puerto Rico to Antigua.  He has been sharing his travel stories on the tripwolf blog, and now here is the trailer for his documentary, “Destination: Music.”

Tell me about the most interesting instrument you encountered.

“The most interesting instruments I came across were the ones that the slaves on Caribbean plantations constructed for themselves.  Because their European masters lived in constant fear of rebellion, slaves were forbidden from any activity that might allow them to communicate, or even recall the heritage that was taken from them.  Dancing and drumming were at the top of this list, so the Africans learned to fashion instruments out of things that their captors discarded, such as cheese crates, goat carcasses and old barrels of molasses.  Learning about this really moved me, because it demonstrated how the human drive to create, remember and celebrate something fine is so strong that it can survive even the worst of circumstances.”

Living for Travel – Interview with Ben Box

Travel guide author Ben Box in an interview about the joys and the chores of writing about travel for a living.

„Willing to go everywhere and see everything“

For nearly  20 years, Ben Box, 57, has been the editor of the South American Handbook, Footprints flagship guide book that was first published in 1924. Sebastian from tripwolf reached him on the phone in Suffolk, UK, where Ben lives with his wife Sarah who edits Footprint’s Caribbean guide books.

Sebastian: You are working at your desk in England at the moment. How much do you get to travel for work?

Ben: I do some traveling, but not as much as I could. This year I have been to the Falkland Islands for two weeks and I’ll travel to Peru for 3 weeks soon. Editing the South American Handbook is more of a desk job because many writers are involved.

Sebastian: How many writers do you need for that? The South American Handbook covers the whole continent and has nearly 2000 pages!

Ben: For the upcoming edition there are 12 writers involved, and they usually  have other people supporting them. We pull together information from our country guides for Argentina, Chile, Brazil and other books, we follow up on hundreds of letters from readers, and we do our own research in the field.

Sebastian: I was always struck by the level of detail in Footprint guides. I remember a hotel in Puno, Peru, just being described as „Good value, many blankets.“  And when I went there, they really had 5 or 6 blankets on the bed. How do you pull together all this encyclopedic knowledge?

History Lessons around Hue, Vietnam – Guest Blogger – simox

Simox, an avid tripwolf user and travel writer is on the trip of a lifetime in Vietnam. This is his story about traveling from Hanoi to Hue, and reflections on being a tourist. (Original Post)

“Going from Hanoi to Hue with the night train was an experience on its own. I do not know if the condition of the train or the condition of the tracks are to blame for the bumpy ride, but once used to it, it was not bad overall.
Walking through the coaches allowed me to see how much the Vietnamese people enjoy to travel, it was more lively than any street corner in Hanoi. In the dinning car they had some interesting offers on the menu, for example partly hatched eggs.

Once arrived in Hue it is obvious that tourism is much more present in this part of Vietnam, but not in an entirely bad way. The town is beautiful and well taken care of, on the other hand the motorbike drivers also work as part time pimps and want to take you to “Lady Bars”. Prostitution is one of the most depressing implications of mass tourism…
